A blank screen, a screen that ignores you, and a smart thermostat that's lost connection are three different problems.

Thermostat problems
The thermostat is the one part of the system almost everyone touches directly: which also makes it the first thing worth ruling out before assuming the furnace or AC itself has failed.
The thermostat is a control, not the heating or cooling itself
A thermostat's job is to tell the furnace or AC when to run. When it fails, the symptom can look identical to the equipment itself failing: no heat, no cooling, nothing responding to a change in setpoint. This section is about telling those two situations apart quickly, since the fix for each is completely different.
Thermostat guides
No Wi-Fi, no power, and no call reaching the furnace are three faults with one name. Watch the furnace, not the screen.
The screen only shows what the thermostat is asking for. Check whether the equipment answers.
Lost schedules and random reboots usually trace back to weak batteries or an unsteady low-voltage supply.
Before you blame the equipment, check where the thermostat sits and how tight its cycle settings are.
Colors are a habit, not a standard. Read the letter on the terminal, photograph it, and leave the rewiring to a technician.
Frozen screen, a set point that will not change or a system that will not stop: check batteries and settings first.
