Thermostat stuck? Start with the batteries and the settings

Frozen screen, a number that will not change or a system that will not stop. Here is what usually causes each one and the safe checks before you call anyone.

Why does my thermostat seem stuck?

"Stuck" usually means one of three things. The screen is frozen, the temperature will not change, or the system will not stop running. Each has a different cause, so decide which one you have first.

Most stuck thermostats are not broken. Dead batteries, a screen that has locked, or a setting you did not know was on cause the majority. Start with the cheap, safe checks.

What should you check when the screen is frozen or blank?

Batteries first. Many thermostats run on two AA or AAA cells, and a weak pair can leave the screen dim, frozen or showing the wrong number. Swap in fresh ones and give it a minute.

If the thermostat is hardwired and has no batteries, look for a breaker or switch that powers the furnace or air handler. A tripped breaker is easy to spot and easy to reset once. If it trips again, stop and call a technician.

Some models have a small reset in the menu. Use the maker's instructions, not a hunt for tiny buttons. Do not pry anything apart.

Why will the temperature not change when you press the buttons?

Look for the quiet settings. A keypad lock, a hold on the schedule, or a program that overrides your change will all make the thermostat feel stuck. The screen usually shows a small padlock, the word Hold, or the word Schedule.

Check the mode too. A thermostat set to Cool will not heat the house, however high you set it. And a thermostat set to Off ignores the set point entirely.

Smart thermostats add another layer. Away modes, geofencing and app schedules can fight the number you just typed. If it changes back, open the app and look there.

Is the displayed temperature wrong or frozen?

A reading that never moves can mean the sensor is reading the wrong place. A thermostat on an exterior wall, above a vent or in a sunny hallway reports what is around it, not what the room feels like.

Wipe dust from the cover with a soft dry cloth. Do not spray cleaner into the vents on the case. If the number stays frozen after fresh batteries, the thermostat itself may need replacing, which is a job for a licensed HVAC technician when wiring is involved.

What if the system will not stop running?

First, set the mode to Off. If the equipment stops, the problem is a setting, often the fan switched to On instead of Auto. Turn the fan back to Auto and see if it settles.

If the equipment keeps running with the thermostat Off, the thermostat is not the cause. A stuck relay or a control fault at the furnace or air handler needs a licensed technician. Cut power at the breaker if you must, and then call.

What not to do

  • Do not pull wires off the terminals or jump two terminals together to force the system on. That can blow the control board fuse.
  • Do not open the furnace or air handler to investigate. The thermostat is the only part this article covers.
  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again.
  • If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. The same applies if a carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Leave first and investigate never.

When to call a licensed technician

Call when fresh batteries and the settings above change nothing. Call when the equipment runs with the thermostat set to Off, or when a breaker keeps tripping. Call when you can see a loose, cracked or burnt wire behind the cover. Thermostat wiring is electrical work on gas-fired equipment, and it belongs to a licensed HVAC technician.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my thermostat frozen on one screen?

Weak batteries are the most common cause. Replace them and wait a minute. If it is hardwired, check that the furnace or air handler has power, and call a licensed technician if the screen stays frozen.

Why will my thermostat not let me change the temperature?

Look for a keypad lock, a Hold setting or an active schedule. The mode also matters: a thermostat set to Cool will not heat, and one set to Off ignores the set point.

Why does my heat keep running after the house is warm?

Set the mode to Off. If the equipment stops, a setting such as the fan being On is the cause. If it keeps running, the fault is at the equipment and needs a licensed technician.

Should I replace a stuck thermostat myself?

Swapping batteries is fine. Disconnecting and rewiring a thermostat is electrical work on gas-fired equipment, so leave it to a licensed HVAC technician.
