Air purifier not working

Most purifiers that seem dead are really clogged, misplaced or waiting for a filter reset. The fix is usually free.

Short answer: when a portable air purifier stops working, the cause is nearly always a spent or badly seated filter, a blocked intake. Or a filter-change indicator that was never reset. Real motor failures are the exception.

Start with the plug and the filter door

Many models have a safety switch that cuts power if the filter cover is not fully closed. So a unit that looks dead may just be missing a click. Unplug it, remove the filter, seat it again and close the door until it stops moving.

Then try a different outlet. A tripped outlet or a power strip that was switched off looks exactly like a failed purifier.

Weak airflow means a clogged filter

A purifier only cleans the air that actually passes through it. As the filter loads with dust, airflow drops, and the fan often speeds up or strains to compensate. That is when you hear the change in sound.

Most units have a washable or vacuumable pre-filter in front of the main one. Clean that first. If the main filter is past the interval the maker lists, replace it. Cleaning a filter that is not designed to be washed can ruin it.

The filter light is often just a timer

Many purifiers count run hours and turn on a light when the count runs out. They do not measure how dirty the filter really is. So the light can stay on after you have changed the filter if the counter was never reset. And it can stay off on a unit sitting in a dusty room.

Look up the reset step for your model. It is usually a button held for a few seconds. Do not ignore the light for months, though: it is a rough guide, and it exists for a reason.

Placement matters more than people think

A purifier pushed against a wall or tucked behind a couch cannot pull in much air. Leave open space around every intake and outlet, as the manual describes, and keep it off soft surfaces that block the base.

Size matters too. A small unit in a large open room will run all day and never seem to help. That is not a fault. It is a mismatch, and no repair will fix it.

A whole-house cleaner on the ductwork is different

If your air cleaner is built into the furnace or air handler, the same idea applies to its media filter. But the electronic cells and UV lamps are another matter. Do not open cabinets with electrical parts or lamps. That work belongs to a licensed HVAC technician, and our guide to HVAC air purifiers and air cleaners explains what each type does.

What not to do

  • Do not keep running a unit that smells of burning or hums with no airflow. Unplug it.
  • Do not take apart a unit that is still plugged in.
  • Do not buy an ozone-producing model to fix an odor problem.
  • Do not wash a filter the maker says must be replaced.

When it is time to stop troubleshooting

If the filter is fresh, the outlet works and the unit still will not run or runs weakly, the motor or control board has likely failed. On a low-cost portable unit, replacing it usually makes more sense than repairing it. Check the warranty first. For a unit wired into your ductwork, call a licensed HVAC technician.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change an air purifier filter?

Follow the interval printed in the manual, since it varies by design and by how dusty your home is. Pets, smoke and construction dust shorten it.

Why does my air purifier smell bad?

A loaded filter can hold odors, and a new one can smell briefly out of the box. A hot or electrical smell is different: unplug the unit and stop using it.
